Two bases stand at opposite ends of one long strip of land, and everything walks toward the middle. In Age of War you start in the stone age with a cave, 175 gold and a base worth 500 health points. The opening army is three units: a Club man for 15 gold, a Slingshot man for 25 and a Dino rider for 100. They march right on their own and fight whatever they meet, and every kill pays gold and experience. Experience is the real currency of the game. At 4000 XP the star button lets you evolve into the next age, which unlocks a new set of soldiers and turrets and also gives your base extra health, the only way to recover it, because the base cannot be repaired. There are five ages in total. Each one has a special attack on a long cooldown; in the stone age it is a rain of burning rocks that falls across the whole field. Louissi made the game in 2007, and the march-across-the-ages idea has been imitated many times since.

How to play Age of War

  1. Press Play and choose Normal, Harder or Impossible.
  2. Open the unit menu and queue a few Club men. They walk out of the cave and meet the enemy halfway.
  3. Mix in Slingshot men behind the melee units and a Dino rider when you can afford one.
  4. Buy a turret for the cave: Rock slingshot for 100, Egg automatic for 200 or Primitive Catapult for 500.
  5. Save XP for the star. Evolving gives stronger units and more base health; destroy the enemy base to win.

Tips

  • Do not empty your purse on the first wave. Gold spent on soldiers that die in a queue is gold that cannot buy the turret you will need when the enemy reaches the cave.
  • A turret on the cave keeps shooting while your soldiers are busy at the front, so one early Egg automatic is a safety net for the moment a push breaks through.
  • Fire the special when the enemy has several units bunched together, not on a single soldier. The rocks cover the whole field and take a long time to come back.
  • Units that die still give you experience, so a steady trade at the front line pushes you toward the next age even when you are not winning ground.

Questions about Age of War

How many ages are there in Age of War?

Five. Each age has its own soldiers, turrets and special attack, and evolving needs experience points rather than gold.

Can I heal my base?

Not directly. The base cannot be repaired, but every evolution adds health to it, so evolving on time is your repair.

What do the difficulty levels change?

Normal, Harder and Impossible set how hard the computer pushes. Start on Normal: our first Normal game was lost by spending every coin on early soldiers.

Can I play Age of War on a phone?

Not well. It is mouse-only and the front line is reached by moving the pointer to the edge of the screen, which a touch screen cannot do. Use a computer.
