Shift At Midnight is a first-person horror game about paperwork. You are working the night shift at an isolated country gas station in the late 1990s, and some of the people who walk up to the counter are not people. They look human, they carry driver's licences and they answer questions, but they are doppelgangers, and your job is to keep them outside until morning without turning away the ordinary travellers.

Every visitor is a small investigation. You ask for the licence, then open the store computer and compare the card against the local database: name, date of birth, physical description. A wrong digit or a mismatched detail is evidence. You can also ask up to five questions, and the answers matter as much for how they are delivered as for what they say. Hesitation, answers that come a moment too late, strange speech or a face that looks slightly off are all warning signs. If the story and the records disagree, you refuse entry and sound the alarm.

Between customers the shift keeps you busy. Boxes need unpacking, shelves need restocking, coffee needs brewing and the floor needs cleaning, and the CCTV monitors show the pumps and the dark parking area outside. The chores are not filler: they pull you away from the counter and the cameras, which is exactly when something can get close.

If you let the wrong visitor in, the game changes from inspection to survival. You board up doors, set traps at entrances, kill the lights to hide, and fall back to the locked back office when danger gets too near. Each night is a tense stretch of careful checking followed by the possibility of things going badly wrong, and a single shift takes around ten to fifteen minutes. It is played with keyboard and mouse.

How to play Shift At Midnight

  1. When a customer arrives, ask for their driver's licence.
  2. Check the licence against the store computer's database and look for mismatched names, dates or physical details.
  3. Use up to five questions and watch the answers, the voice and the face for anything unnatural.
  4. Let consistent customers in and refuse anyone whose story and records disagree, then sound the alarm.
  5. Keep up with restocking, coffee, cleaning and the security cameras between visits, and survive until morning.

Tips

  • Compare every field on the licence, not just the name; the giveaway is often a date or a physical description.
  • Glance at the CCTV monitors after each chore so nothing reaches the door unseen.
  • If an intruder does get inside, head for the back office early instead of trying to finish your tasks.
