SimplyUp.io opens on a choice of four modes: Classic, Playground, Mars and Soccer, each with its own picture card. Classic drops your third-person climber, a curly-haired figure in a red hoodie and jeans, onto a quiet suburban street. There is a grey house with a fence, a park bench, a striped beach umbrella over a playground slide, and glowing blue pads on the asphalt marked with question and exclamation signs, plus a rainbow top hat floating over one of them. A billboard on the road announces the current record in big white letters; when we played it read TOP 737m. A counter under your feet starts at 0 m and a timer runs at the top of the screen.

The point is straight up. A ramp of rail track leads from the street into the sky, and from there the course is a chain of floating everyday objects, roofs, vehicles, trampolines and platforms that do not stay put, stacked higher and higher. There is no checkpoint. Miss a landing and you fall as far as gravity takes you, which can mean all the way back to the street. That is the hook: every metre is earned and can be lost in a second.

The built-in controls card lists four things for keyboard players: WASD or arrows to move, the mouse to look around, Space or the right mouse button to jump, and holding Space in mid air to grab a ledge and pull yourself up. A second tab covers phones and a third covers gamepads. Side buttons let you open a map with M, emote with Q, open chat with H and use F for a ragdoll flop.

The pause menu leads to Career, a Locker for outfits, Settings and a Play With Friends option, with the server region shown in the corner.

How to play SimplyUp.io

  1. Pick Classic on the mode screen and wait for the street to load.
  2. Click inside the game so the mouse controls the camera.
  3. Run up the rail ramp out of the street and start hopping between floating objects.
  4. Hold Space during a jump that falls short so the climber catches the edge and pulls up.
  5. Keep climbing and watch the metre counter; the billboard shows the height to beat.

Tips

  • Line the camera up with the next platform before you jump, not while you are already in the air.
  • Short, controlled hops are safer than sprinting at a gap, since there is nothing to catch you below.
  • Try Playground mode to practise jumping and mantling without risking a long climb.
