The sequel to Age of War, made by Louissi for Max Games around 2010, keeps the idea of two bases facing each other across one battlefield, but almost everything around it is new. The top of the screen is now one big command bar split into four groups: Units, Turrets, Specials and Upgrades. In the stone age you can field a Slinger for 100 gold, a Clubman for 130, a Speedy Dino for 200 and an Assault Dino for 600, which stays locked until you build a Dino Hut from the upgrades. Turrets are a Mamooth Catapult, an Egg Rifle in which an angry hen fires eggs, and a Rock Slingshot, and a separate button builds an extra defence tower. Specials hold the Meteorite Rain for 2000 XP and the evolution to the Spartan Age for 7000 XP. Upgrades raise support damage, income from kills and more. Each soldier has a tooltip with HP, damage, speed, build time and population cost, and your army is capped at ten population. You start with 2500 gold and 1000 XP.
| Unit portraits | Click to train a soldier; hover to read HP, damage, range and cost |
|---|---|
| Turret icons | Pick a turret, then click a green Build slot on your base; the bar shows Cancel while you place it |
| Tower button | Build an extra defence tower to hold more turrets |
| Specials | Fire Meteorite Rain or evolve to the next age when you have the XP |
| Upgrades | Buy the Dino Hut, damage boosts and income levels |
| Options and Game speed | Pause the game or speed up the battle from the bottom bar |
How to play Age of War 2
- Click Start Game and choose Easy, Medium, Hard or Insane Difficulty. A short tutorial overlay labels every part of the screen; click to dismiss it.
- Train a few soldiers at once. They walk right from your cave, fight anything they meet and earn gold and XP when they win.
- Buy a turret and place it on the Build slot of your base, so enemies that break through are shot before they reach it.
- Spend gold on upgrades such as income or the Dino Hut, and save XP for Meteorite Rain or the jump to the Spartan Age.
- Destroy the enemy base on the right before your own base health, shown at the bottom left, drops to zero.
Tips
- Do not open with one or two units. Our first games on Easy were lost to a steady stream of enemy clubmen; queuing eight or nine soldiers right away held the line.
- Slingers have range 180 and attack from behind the melee units, so mix them in rather than training only Clubmen.
- A Mamooth Catapult on the base costs 750 but keeps hitting while your army regroups.
- Population is capped at ten, so upgrades and turrets are where extra gold should go once the field is full.
Questions about Age of War 2
How is Age of War 2 different from the first Age of War?
It adds an upgrade tree, a Dino Hut that unlocks the Assault Dino, buildable defence towers, an XP-priced special attack, four difficulty levels and a game speed button. Unit names and prices are all new.
How do I unlock the Assault Dino?
Buy the Dino Hut in the Upgrades group for 300 gold. Until then the portrait shows a lock.
What does evolving do?
Evolve to Spartan Age costs 7000 XP and, as its tooltip says, upgrades your armour and weapons for the next era.
Can I play Age of War 2 on a tablet?
Every action is a click on a button or a slot, so taps work in principle, but the icons are small and the tooltips need a hovering mouse. A computer is better.
