In Infectonator you are not fighting the zombie apocalypse, you are starting it. Each level is a small pixel-art scene, a white room in the tutorial, then a forest camp with tents and a campfire, full of people strolling about and chatting in speech bubbles. You place one infection with a click. The victim turns into a zombie, shambles after the nearest person and bites them, and if the bite takes, the outbreak grows on its own. A quota at the top tells you how many people must fall before the sixty-second timer runs out. Dead victims drop coins, and the money buys upgrades on a green computer screen between levels: zombie lifespan, speed, damage resistance, attack and infection chance, plus items such as grenades and a virus that passes through walls. Toge Productions released it in 2009. The style is cute, but there is a lot of pixel blood, so it suits older players.
| Left click on a person | Release the virus at that spot and turn the target into the first zombie |
|---|---|
| Click with a grenade | Throw a grenade you bought; it kills people and zombies in the blast instantly |
| Mouse on the upgrade screen | Hover an icon to read what it does, click a bar or item to buy it with collected coins |
How to play Infectonator
- Click Start on the title screen. The first stage is a short tutorial that explains each mechanic in a red box at the top; click to move through it.
- Read the goal text, for example Kill at least 6 people, and look at the timer in the bottom bar.
- Click a person standing in the middle of a crowd to start the infection. The chain then plays out without you.
- Coins burst out of fallen victims and are counted in the bottom bar. They fund the next round of upgrades.
- Between levels, spend money on the virus and on items, then press the button to continue to the next day.
Tips
- Start where people bunch up. A first zombie standing alone may never reach anyone before its lifespan ends.
- Lifespan and infection chance pay off first; a slow zombie that lives longer still bites more people than a fast one that collapses.
- Agents in black suits and armed heroes cannot be turned with the first click and fight back, so let the horde reach them instead.
- On the statistics screen, avoid the Power On/Off switch in the corner unless you want to quit: it ends the run and shows Game Over.
Questions about Infectonator
Is Infectonator violent?
Yes, in a cartoon way. The graphics are tiny pixel sprites, but zombies leave red splatter and corpses everywhere. It is better for teenagers and adults.
Can I click more than once?
The virus starts from a single click. After that you can only help the outbreak with items you bought, such as grenades.
What do the coins do?
They are the money for upgrades. Each level adds what you collected, and the upgrade screen shows the cost of each bar.
Does it work on touch screens?
The game uses only mouse clicks, so a tap can stand in for a click. The pixel targets are small, and a larger screen is more comfortable.
