Penalty Shootout 2012 skips the ninety minutes and goes straight to the part everyone remembers. You pick one of sixteen European national sides, laid out in four groups of four on the team screen, and then play shootouts in which you both take and save kicks. Shooting is broken into three quick mouse decisions: a sliding marker for direction, a second for height and a rising gauge for power. Stop each one at the right moment and the ball goes where you meant it to. When the roles swap you are the goalkeeper, and the only input is a single click on the gloves as the striker strikes; go too early or too late and the ball is in the net. The pre-rendered stadium, the crowd and the flag-based team list date it clearly to the summer of 2012, when Spil Games released it as a tie-in for the European football season.

How to play Penalty Shootout 2012

  1. Press Start and choose a national team from the four groups.
  2. When shooting, click to lock the horizontal aim, then the vertical aim.
  3. Click a third time to stop the power gauge; too much sends the ball over the bar.
  4. When keeping goal, watch the striker and click the gloves at the moment of the kick.
  5. Score more than your opponent across the rounds to keep your team in the tournament.

Tips

  • Aim for the lower corners; low shots are harder to save and less likely to sail over.
  • Power near the middle of the gauge is usually enough; the red top end is risky.
  • As goalkeeper, focus on the kicking foot rather than the ball.
