Before the opening chamber, a plain grey screen says the quiet part out loud: this is a fan-made game, and its makers were never in touch with the company behind the 2007 original. What follows is a sideways, hand-built tribute by the We Create Stuff team. You play test subject 15837, who wakes up inside a glass cell with a bed and a toilet and is told to reach the exit door alive. The only tool is a handheld portal device. Click a wall or floor, and one end of a portal opens there; click again, and the other end appears in the second colour. Walk or fall into one opening and you come out of the other. There are 40 numbered tasks, and some carry names that warn you what is coming, such as Portal-Proof walls, Anti-Object, Red Buttons, Cubes and They can shoot you.

How to play Portal: The Flash Version

  1. Click Play when the loading bar is full, read the fan-game notice or press Skip, then choose New Game and Start.
  2. Press any key on the black Launching screen. The briefing text appears at the top; press Enter to hide it.
  3. Aim with the mouse and click to place portals. Each new shot moves one end of the pair, so you can reposition them as often as you like.
  4. Use W to jump onto ledges, and step into a portal to come out of its twin somewhere else in the room.
  5. Reach the exit door marked with a running figure. Level Select on the main menu lists all 40 tasks if you want to return to one.

Tips

  • Shots stop at the first surface they hit. Glass blocks them too, so from inside the starting cell you cannot simply aim past its walls.
  • Read the task name in Level Select before starting a new section; it often names the trick the next rooms are built around.
  • Task 6 is called ASHPD+Momentum, and from there on how fast you enter a portal starts to matter as much as where you put it.
  • Options lets you switch off the crosshair or the guidance hints, lower effects for slow machines and show the level number on screen.

Questions about Portal: The Flash Version

Is this the real Portal?

No. It is an unofficial fan game made by We Create Stuff in 2007, and the game itself says so before you start. The original Portal is a separate commercial game.

How many levels are there?

Level Select lists 40 tasks, from Meet the ASHPD at number 1 up to task 40.

Why does my portal not appear where I clicked?

The shot travels in a straight line from the gun and lands on the first wall, floor or ceiling in the way. Glass and some marked walls will not hold a portal.

Does it work on a phone?

No. You need a keyboard to move and jump and a mouse to aim, so play it on a computer.
