Shawn Tanner of Afro Ninja made Territory War in 2006, and it borrows the rhythm of classic team artillery games but swaps worms for stick figures. Two teams of three stand on a small island of grass, rocks and floating wooden planks. Play passes back and forth one soldier at a time. On your turn the selected figure first gets a short walk, limited by a Distance Travelled bar, with a jump on Space to climb onto a ledge. Then you pick one action: a grenade that arcs and bounces, a gun that fires in a straight line at the angle you set, a boot for a close kick, or simply stay put. Each soldier has his own name and health, and the bar under each team name shows how much life the whole side has left. The red arrow above a head marks whose turn it is. Before a campaign mission you name your team and all three soldiers, which makes losing one sting a little more.

How to play Territory War

  1. Click inside the game, then choose Campaign, Challenges or Custom Battle.
  2. In the campaign pick a mission, read its briefing and fill in your team name and three soldier names, then press Start.
  3. On each turn press 1 to move or 2 to stay. Walk with the arrows until the distance bar runs out or you press stop.
  4. Choose a weapon. Aim with the arrow keys, then press Space to shoot or hold it to throw a grenade further.
  5. The CPU or the second player takes a turn with one of their soldiers. Last team standing wins.

Tips

  • High ground matters. A soldier on the stone tower or a plank can lob grenades down onto the beach, while the enemy has to throw uphill.
  • Hold Space longer for distance, but a grenade bounces, so aim for a spot a little short of the target and let it roll in.
  • The boot only reaches an enemy right next to you. Keep it for the turn when a rival has walked up beside your soldier.
  • Press V before moving to see where the other team is hiding. The camera only shows part of the island at once.

Questions about Territory War

Can two people play Territory War?

Yes. Custom Battle has a Player 1 vs Player 2 mode where you take turns on the same keyboard, and a Player 1 vs CPU mode for solo practice.

What is in the campaign?

Ten missions that unlock one after another. The first is a three against three fight for control of the island; the game saves which ones you have cleared.

What are Challenges?

Six timed tasks with a best time shown for each, a good way to practise aiming once the campaign gets hard.

Does it work on phones?

No. Every turn uses keyboard keys for moving, aiming and firing, so you need a computer with a physical keyboard.
