Rebuild begins a year after the outbreak, with a short note that the plague started in Holland and that the survivors are done running. You get a walled fort of four buildings in the middle of a city, a dozen people and 150 units of food. Everything else on the isometric map belongs to the dead: darker blocks are full of zombies, black patches are not even scouted. Each building is a decision. A warehouse, a bar, a hospital, a church, a police station, a motel, a supermarket and a power plant all do something different once reclaimed. Your survivors have specialties, so soldiers make zombie clearing safer and others are better at scavenging, and every mission shows a danger percentage before you commit. Missions take a set number of days, and pressing End Day moves the clock, eats food and delivers a newspaper-style report. Sarah Northway made the game in 2011; this is the 1.32 Flash release.

How to play Rebuild

  1. Type a username if you like, press Start, read the opening note and continue to the city map.
  2. Follow the tutorial notes at the bottom, or press Skip Tutorial. Each note closes with Okay.
  3. Click a building outside the walls and choose Scout the Area first. Scouting reveals zombies, food and survivors there.
  4. Before a dangerous job, pick a team. A kill mission with three soldiers showed 1% danger, against 15% with one.
  5. Use Kill Zombies, then Reclaim Area, to move the wall outward. Press End Day when everyone useful has a job.

Tips

  • Never leave people idle in the fort at the end of a day; the tutorial itself nags you about it for good reason.
  • Scout before anything else. It is the cheapest, safest mission, and it makes later missions on the same block less dangerous.
  • Food is the clock you cannot stop. Look for buildings that report food when scouted and claim them early.
  • Watch the happiness face at the top of the screen. Hungry or grieving survivors are less willing to go out.

Questions about Rebuild

Is Rebuild real-time?

No. Nothing happens until you press End Day, so you can plan every assignment calmly.

Can survivors die on missions?

Yes, missions carry a danger percentage, and losing people is a real risk. A bigger or better-suited team lowers it.

Does the game save progress?

Flash saves are stored in your browser, so keep using the same browser and do not clear site data if you want to continue.

Can I play it on a tablet?

Every action is a click or a drag on the map, so taps work in principle. The handwritten text is small, which makes a big screen easier.
