Strike Force Heroes is a 2D shooter seen from the side, with maps built like a doll's house cut open: rooms stacked on top of each other, ladders of platforms and crates, and a small minimap in the top right corner. Sky9 Games made it in 2012. The campaign has fifteen stages and starts with a tutorial called Under Siege, in which you are not a soldier at all. You play an unarmed scientist escaping a research facility on an island far out in the ocean while masked troops sweep the labs. You crawl through ventilation ducts under their feet and watch them talk over the radio about the resistance they met. After that the game turns into what it is known for: matches against computer-controlled soldiers, where each class levels up on its own and the respawn screen lets you swap between medic, sniper, gunner and tank-style roles. Quick Match lets you set the mode, map, kill limit, skills and killstreaks yourself.

How to play Strike Force Heroes

  1. Click Play, type a profile name and press Continue. The main menu has Play, Soldiers, Options, Medals and Tips along the bottom.
  2. Open Play and start the Campaign with stage 1, Under Siege. It is marked as a tutorial and teaches movement, jumping and crouching.
  3. When a green arrow points at the floor, stand on it and hold Down to squeeze into the duct below, then keep crouching to crawl.
  4. In normal matches, pick up weapons, aim with the mouse and reach the kill target before the bots do. Each kill earns experience for the class you are using.
  5. After you die the respawn timer shows Change Class icons. Click one to come back as a different soldier.

Tips

  • The Tips menu says snipers struggle in small maps, so switch to a close-range or melee loadout when the map is tight.
  • Leveling is faster if you stick to one class for a while. Switching every round spreads the experience thin.
  • On the Foundry map the briefing warns about lava pouring down from above. A bright orange column falls without much warning and kills instantly, so do not wait under the vats.
  • If the game runs slowly, lower the graphics setting in Options rather than restarting the match.
  • Quick Match warns you to finish the tutorial first, but you can skip it. Very Easy difficulty with ten kills to win is a gentle first match.

Questions about Strike Force Heroes

Do I have to play the tutorial?

No, though the game recommends it. Quick Match asks once and then lets you continue straight into a deathmatch.

Is there multiplayer?

Not in this version. Every other fighter in a match is a computer bot, which you add in the Quick Match player list.

Why did I die without being shot?

Some maps have hazards. The Foundry has falling lava, and the kill feed calls it a suicide by environment.

Does Strike Force Heroes work on a phone?

No. It needs a keyboard for movement and a mouse for aiming, so play it on a computer.
