The Impossible Quiz looks like a school test drawn with a felt-tip pen and behaves like a practical joke. Each screen has a numbered question in big blue letters and four answer boxes, and the right answer is almost never the sensible one. The first question asks how many holes there are in a polo, and the answer depends on which polo you picture. The second asks whether a match can box. The third is written completely backwards and only makes sense once you read it the other way round. You start with three lives for the entire run, shown in the bottom left corner, and every wrong click removes one on the spot. Run out and you are back at question one. This is the Deluxe build that Splapp-me-do released online in 2007; it opens with a short Splapp-me-do presents intro before the hand-drawn menu with Start, Instructions and Credits.

How to play The Impossible Quiz

  1. Click Begin when the loader finishes and wait through the short intro.
  2. Press Start on the main menu. Instructions explains the rules if you want them in the game's own words.
  3. Read the question and all four answers before clicking. Puns and literal readings are usually the way in.
  4. A correct click moves you to the next number at once. A wrong one takes a life and leaves you on the same question.
  5. Lose all three lives and the quiz starts over from question one, so memorising earlier answers is part of the game.

Tips

  • Read the question as literally as possible. A polo can be a mint as well as a shirt, and a match box can mean a match that boxes.
  • Text that looks scrambled is often just reversed. Read it from the last letter to the first before you panic.
  • The orange glow only follows your pointer. It is not a hint, so move the mouse away while you think.
  • Keep a short note of solved questions. A long run is mostly about getting the early ones right fast so you have lives left for the new ones.

Questions about The Impossible Quiz

How many lives do I have?

Three for the whole quiz, displayed in the bottom left corner. There is no way to refill them by answering correctly.

What happens when I run out of lives?

The game ends and the next attempt starts again from question one.

Is it a real knowledge quiz?

No. Hardly any question tests facts. They test lateral thinking, puns and how carefully you read.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?

The answers are just clicks, so a tablet tap can work, but the game was built for a mouse and runs heavier on mobile browsers. A computer gives the smoothest result.
