Wonderputt is mini golf played on a single floating diorama. The whole course sits on screen at once: a sandy plateau pitted with craters, a farm field with red barns, an office block with a clock tower, a pink pipe loop under a rainbow, a domed observatory and a ring of standing stones. You start on the craters. When the ball drops, the scenery comes alive and builds the next hole in front of you; after my first one a flying saucer landed on the field and the grass rearranged itself into a fairway with a new cup. There are eighteen holes, each with a par shown on a little flag, and a stroke bubble floats over the ball as you play. Damp Gnat released the game in 2011, and the art is what people remember: soft colours, tiny moving details and no timer at all. It is a relaxed game, and the challenge is only your own score against par.

How to play Wonderputt

  1. Click start game, wait for the island to assemble, then press Play on the three-picture help card.
  2. Find the ball and the flag with the hole number and par. The stroke counter above the ball starts at 1.
  3. Move the pointer away from the ball. The pink arrow shows direction, and a longer arrow means a harder hit.
  4. Click to putt. Wait for the ball to stop before aiming again; the stroke counter goes up by one each time.
  5. Sink the ball to finish the hole. The island changes shape, and the next hole and its par appear.

Tips

  • The arrow is very sensitive. On the first hole even a short one rolled the ball across a whole crater, so start soft.
  • Craters and slopes curve the ball. Aim a little uphill of the cup and let the slope carry the putt down.
  • Watch the scenery between holes. The animation shows the new layout before you get control again.
  • There is no clock, so take your time lining up each putt. Patience is the only thing that lowers the score.

Questions about Wonderputt

How many holes does Wonderputt have?

Eighteen. The title screen shows a thumbnail for each one, and they are played in order on the same island.

How do I control the shot power?

By distance. The farther the pointer is from the ball, the longer the arrow and the harder the putt.

Is there a time limit?

No. Only strokes count, and each hole has a par number to beat.

Can I play Wonderputt on a phone?

It is mouse-only, aim then click, so a tap can trigger a putt. Without a hovering pointer, aiming is harder than on a computer.
