Station Meltdown is a first-person shooter set inside a space station that looks as if every light on board has switched to emergency red. Walls are built from chunky panels and pixel-sharp textures, cables and pipes run along the ceiling, stacked crates and red barrels line the corridors, and at the far end of each passage a doorway glows orange like a furnace. In the background of the main menu, lean humanoid robots with long blades for forearms stand waiting, and they give you a fair idea of what lives further down the halls.

The menu has only two entries, Play and Settings, and the settings go deeper than the look suggests: separate Gameplay, Audio, Video and Controls pages. Press Play and you are dropped into a corridor with a pistol already raised. The magazine holds nine rounds, and the counter in the lower right shows what is left. A reminder panel lists the extra keys: right mouse button for a melee strike, R to reload, Q to open a weapon wheel and Left Shift to dash. The health bar sits in the lower left and starts at 100.

Scoring is built around momentum. A circular gauge at the top of the screen holds a multiplier, starting at x1, with your points on one side and a stopwatch counting hours, minutes and seconds on the other. A records card at the start of a run tracks four numbers: kills, points, time and rooms. That last one tells you how the game is shaped: you push from one chamber of the station to the next, and the run is judged by how far and how fast you get.

This is a desktop game for a mouse and keyboard. The download is heavy, so give the Unity loader a minute or two before the menu appears.

How to play Station Meltdown

  1. Wait for the Unity loading bar to fill; the build is large.
  2. Choose Play in the main menu, or open Settings first to adjust sensitivity and graphics.
  3. Click into the game so the mouse controls your aim.
  4. Move through the corridors and shoot the station's robots before they reach you.
  5. Reload with R between fights and use melee or a dash when an enemy gets close.
  6. Keep advancing from room to room to raise your kills, points and rooms cleared.

Tips

  • Reload as soon as a room is quiet; nine rounds go quickly once several robots arrive together.
  • Dash sideways, not backwards, when a bladed robot closes in, then turn and fire.
  • Lower the graphics in Video settings if the frame rate drops on a laptop.

Questions about Station Meltdown

What is Station Meltdown?

A retro-styled first-person shooter set in a red-lit space station, where you fight robots and push on from room to room.

What are the controls?

WASD to move, the mouse to aim and shoot, right click for melee, R to reload, Q for the weapon wheel and Left Shift to dash.

Why does it take so long to load?

It is a large Unity build of close to a hundred megabytes, so the first load depends on your connection.

How is a run scored?

The game keeps kills, points, time and rooms cleared, and a multiplier at the top of the screen raises the points you earn.

Is this the same game as PAPERHEAD?

No. Some sites list it under that name, but the game that loads is Station Meltdown, a different shooter.

Can I play it on a phone?

It is made for a mouse and keyboard, so a computer is the way to play.
