Fireboy and Watergirl 2 moves the pair from the overgrown forest to a sand-coloured Light Temple, and it is the 2010 Flash original by Oslo Albet. The basic rules have not changed: Fireboy walks through lava and dies in water, Watergirl swims through water and dies in lava, and green goo is deadly to both. Each level still ends only when both heroes stand in front of their own doors, marked with the fire and water symbols.

What is new is light. Beams shine through the temple, and they can be redirected with mirrors that the heroes push or turn. When a beam lands on a receiver, something in the level moves: a platform lifts, a wall slides aside or a gate opens. Several rooms need the light to travel around corners and through several mirrors before it reaches its target, and a beam that one character is using for a platform may be blocking the other's path. Working out the order in which things need to happen is the real puzzle.

The buttons, levers, lifts and pushable blocks from the first game return, and the levels sit on a branching map that opens up as you finish them. Red and blue gems give each player something to chase, and your time and gem count decide the grade for every room. It is a longer and cleverer sequel, and it still plays best as a two-player game on one keyboard.

How to play Fireboy and Watergirl 2

  1. Wait for the game to load, press Play on the loading screen and then Play in the main menu.
  2. On the level map, start with the highlighted gem at the bottom; new rooms open as you finish them.
  3. Move Fireboy with the arrow keys and Watergirl with A, W and D.
  4. Push and turn mirrors so the beam of light reaches a receiver and powers the platforms or doors linked to it.
  5. Avoid the wrong liquid for each hero and bring both to their own doors to clear the level.

Tips

  • Follow the beam with your eyes before you touch a mirror. Knowing where the light must end up saves a lot of trial and error.
  • A receiver only works while light touches it. If a character has to stand in the beam, the platform will drop as soon as they move.
  • Park the character who is not needed on a safe ledge. Most deaths in this game come from a hero left standing next to a pool.
  • If a room seems impossible, try the order of actions the other way around: the tricky part is usually who goes first.
