Fireboy and Watergirl 4 is set in a grey stone Crystal Temple full of glittering shards, and it is the 2012 Flash original by Oslo Albet. The two heroes still share one weakness each: Fireboy dies in water, Watergirl dies in lava and both die in green goo. As in every part of the series, a level is complete only when both characters reach their own doors.

This episode builds its puzzles around beams of light and the machinery they power. Rotating mirror holders sit in the corners of the rooms, and the heroes have to line them up so that the light travels through the level and lands on a receiver. A receiver that is lit moves the platforms linked to it, so one character may need to keep the light pointing the right way while the other rides up to a ledge. On top of that come the buttons, levers, lifts and blocks that returning players will recognise, arranged in longer rooms with more steps to get right.

Levels are laid out on a large web-shaped map that opens outwards from the bottom, with a short tutorial for newcomers. The main menu also has a language switch and links back to the Forest, Light and Ice Temples, so this part works as a starting point for the whole series. Gems and the timer decide your grade for each room, and, like the others, it is designed for two people on one keyboard.

How to play Fireboy and Watergirl 4

  1. Wait for the game to load, press Play on the loading screen and then Play in the main menu.
  2. Choose the lit gem at the bottom of the web-shaped level map to start.
  3. Move Fireboy with the arrow keys and Watergirl with A, W and D.
  4. Turn the mirror holders so the beam reaches a receiver; a lit receiver moves the platforms linked to it.
  5. Avoid the wrong liquid for each hero and take both to their own doors to clear the room.

Tips

  • Trace the beam from its source to the receiver before moving anything. Most rooms have one mirror that matters more than the rest.
  • Decide who holds the light and who travels. The hero in charge of the mirrors should stand somewhere safe.
  • Platforms fall back when the light is lost, so move the travelling hero first and only then change the beam.
  • Collect the gems on a second run. It is easier to plan a clean route once you know how the room works.
