Sugar, Sugar is one of Bart Bonte's small, clever puzzle games, released in 2011. There is no character and no score, just a plain coloured screen, a thin stream of white sugar grains falling from under the title and one or more white cups with a number painted on them. The number is how many grains each cup still needs. Whatever you draw with the mouse becomes a solid line, and the sugar piles up on it, slides down it and pours off its end like real sand. Level 1 explains everything in two sentences, draw with your mouse to get enough sugar in the cup, and has a single cup on a shelf to the right of the stream; one diagonal line from under the spout to the rim is enough. Level 2 adds a second cup on a lower shelf on the other side, and from there the puzzles ask you to split, delay and redirect the flow. The level select screen shows thirty numbered buttons.

How to play Sugar, Sugar

  1. On the main menu click the top button. Under our player its label only shows when the pointer is over it, but it starts the game.
  2. Pick level 1 on the level select screen; later levels unlock as you finish earlier ones.
  3. Watch where the stream falls, then draw a slope that catches it and runs down to the mouth of a cup.
  4. The cup's number counts down as grains land in it. When every cup reads zero the next level begins.
  5. If sugar spills the wrong way or runs out, press reset level and draw a better line before the stream starts.

Tips

  • Draw the ramp first and let the sugar come to it. Lines drawn into a falling stream leave grains stuck on the wrong side.
  • The stream does not last forever. On our first try most of it landed on the floor and the flow stopped before the cup was full.
  • Make the bottom end of a ramp finish just above the cup's rim. If it ends too far away the grains overshoot.
  • On levels with two cups, a ramp toward one cup can be shortened later by resetting and drawing it so sugar falls off halfway toward the second.

Questions about Sugar, Sugar

Why is the first button on the menu empty?

It is a quirk of the emulated player we run the game in. The red button is Play; its text appears when you hover over it and clicking it works normally.

How many levels does Sugar, Sugar have?

The level select screen shows thirty. There is also a freeplay mode on the menu that is locked at the start.

Can I erase a line?

Not one by one. The reset level button removes all your lines and starts the sugar again.

Does Sugar, Sugar work on touch screens?

It only needs press-and-drag, so drawing with a finger can work, but a line drawn on a phone may also scroll the page. A mouse is more reliable.
