The first Duck Life opens with a short photo slideshow: you own a huge farm, a tornado flattens it, and the only thing left standing is a single duck egg. From that egg comes a small yellow duckling, and the plan is to turn it into a racing duck good enough to earn the money for a new farm. The whole game happens between one green field and a few blue menu panels. Four bars sit in the corner, for Energy, Running, Flying and Swimming, each with five yellow pips that fill as experience comes in. Three mini games raise those skills: hopping over rolling rocks, gliding off a grey ramp, and paddling around stone posts in a lake. Coins collected in training pay for seed, and seed is what keeps the duck going in a real race. It was made by Wix Games in 2009 and looks very plain next to the sequels, which is part of its charm.
| Space | Start a training session once the instructions are on screen |
|---|---|
| Up arrow | Jump over rolling objects in running training; jump out of the water when swimming |
| Left and Right arrows | Steer the glide in flying training; move back and forth while swimming |
| Down arrow | Dive under obstacles in swimming training |
| Mouse | Pick menus, buy in the shop and drag seed from the pile onto the duck |
How to play Duck Life
- Click Play, read or skip the farm story, and you land on the field with the duck and a heap of seed on the right.
- Pick Train Running, Train Flying or Train Swimming. Each run ends when you crash or fall, then shows distance, XP and coins.
- XP from each run fills the pips under that skill; a full row raises its level.
- Grab a seed from the heap and drag it onto the duck to raise the Energy bar before racing.
- Open Enter Race. Race Central lists Beginner, Amateur and Expert races plus the World Championship; the beginner set is Green Valley, Rocky Cliff, Shallow Lake and Natural World.
Tips
- Hover over a race before entering. The panel says which skill it tests, so you only need the matching level for that course.
- Natural World mixes all three skills, so leave it until running, flying and swimming have each gained a level or two.
- A race with an empty Energy bar ends almost at once with a sleeping duck. Feed it first; plain seed costs only one coin in the shop.
- Hats at 100 coins and paint at 50 coins are cosmetic. Spend early coins on seed and skill seed instead.
Questions about Duck Life
Why did my duck stop and fall asleep in the race?
It ran out of energy. Drag seed from the pile onto the duck on the main screen, or buy skill seed in the Duck Shop.
How many skills are there in the first Duck Life?
Three trained skills, running, flying and swimming, plus an Energy level that comes from food rather than training.
What can I buy in the Duck Shop?
Hats for 100 coins, paint colours for 50, seed for 1 coin and skill seed for 10. Only the seeds help in races.
Can I play Duck Life on a phone?
Not properly. Training needs the arrow keys and Space, so a computer with a keyboard is the way to play.
