The sequel opens in a hospital room. The penguin from the first game lies in bed with a bandage wrapped around its head, a get well soon card and a plate of fish on the bedside table. It has clearly not given up. The title screen reads The Emperor Strikes Back, and the goal has changed: instead of simply flying far, Story Mode hands you a To Kill List pinned to a corkboard with five targets on it, the Snowman, the Snow Mound, Rocky Hill, the Iceberg and the Wall. Each attempt is a numbered day. The penguin rides a sled down a cliff of ice, leaves the lip and drifts over the sea while a speedometer ticks in the corner, and the results board then pays separately for distance, altitude, duration, top speed and destruction. That money goes into a research sheet with four catalogs, plus bars for ramp length, ramp height and fuel. Light Bringer released it in 2011; Classic and Arcade modes stay greyed out on the menu until you make progress in the story.

How to play Learn to Fly 2

  1. Close the black advert box on the first screen with its CLOSE tab, then press Start Game, or Start Muted if you want silence.
  2. Choose New Game and then Story Mode. A short crash course explains the tilt keys, the five obstacles and the five ways a flight earns money.
  3. The penguin slides down on its own. Wait until it leaves the ramp, then tilt to keep a shallow, fast angle for as long as possible.
  4. On the results board, read what each stat paid. Distance usually pays the most early on, destruction only once you start hitting targets.
  5. On the Research sheet, open the Sleigh, Glider, Boost or Payload catalog, buy what you can afford, then press Ready on the right.

Tips

  • The Plank costs 25 dollars and is the only sled you can buy after the first flight. It noticeably raises the take-off speed even though it falls away right after launch.
  • Gliders come in three kinds: regular hang gliders, passive ones such as balloons and parachutes, and propelled ones with fans or rotors. Try each before saving up for the expensive tier.
  • Boosts are toggled, one-shot or four-shot. A toggled rocket burns only while you hold the button, so it rewards short bursts at the right angle.
  • Payloads add weight for ramming. Explosive payloads blow up on contact with an obstacle and come back for free on the next run.
  • Challenges on the Ready sheet are extra cash goals. Picking one that matches your current upgrades is faster than grinding plain distance.

Questions about Learn to Fly 2

How is this different from the first Learn to Fly?

The first game is about distance alone. Here a story asks you to break five obstacles, flights also pay for top speed and destruction, and the shop adds sleds and payloads.

Why are Classic and Arcade Mode grey?

They are locked on a new save. Story Mode is the only option at the start.

What is the Bonus Shop?

A shop that unlocked only for players signed in on the portal that sponsored the game in 2011. Here it stays closed, and the main story does not need it.

Can I play Learn to Fly 2 on a phone?

It was made for a computer. Steering uses arrow keys or a mouse mode, and we have not confirmed that tapping works the same way, so a desktop browser is the safe choice.
