The second Riddle School drops Phil into band practice. After a short animated opening, he stands next to a music stand in a room packed with rainbow xylophones, a drum kit, a trombone leaning on the wall and a poster titled "Catching Bass" whose clef is drawn backwards. The band director, Mr. O. Boe, stands by the Band Room door, and the joke on his chalkboard reads "I know nothing of music, but much of english". Phil wants out again, and this time his best friend Phred will help only for a dollar. Released in November 2006, a few months after the first game, it is bigger in every direction: the stage is a wide 1050 by 600 picture, the map lists 18 rooms, and the author counts 168 drawn library items. The Fun Facts menu also explains that Phil started life as a tribute character and grew into the face of the series by accident.

How to play Riddle School 2

  1. Open Main Menu and choose Start Game; click once to skip the opening animation if you have seen it.
  2. In the music room, click each instrument and each student to hear what Phil thinks. That is how the game hands out names and clues.
  3. The exit to the Band Room is right there, but Phil refuses to walk through it while Mr. O. Boe is watching. Your first job is to change that.
  4. Phred asks for a dollar in exchange for help, so part of the early game is finding money somewhere in the school.
  5. Collected objects sit in the ITEMS tray. Combine what you find with people and places until each locked route opens and Phil reaches the outside.

Tips

  • The trombone on the left belongs to Phil, and he admits he left the slide oil in Mrs. Sleep's room. Lines like that tell you where to go next.
  • Zack, the pale kid at the xylophone, is always freezing yet wears only one sweater. Character quirks like that are exactly what the game expects you to remember.
  • The drum kit and the backwards bass clef are mostly gags, but clicking them costs nothing and the jokes are half the fun.
  • Use the room map in the corner to check which of the 18 rooms you have not opened yet.

Questions about Riddle School 2

Is Riddle School 2 harder than the first one?

Slightly. There are more rooms, and people want something before they cooperate, so one solved puzzle tends to open the next instead of standing alone.

Why is the game picture wider than usual?

This edition uses a 1050 by 600 stage instead of the 4:3 frame of the other games, so on narrow screens it shows with bars above and below.

Does it work on mobile?

Everything is done by clicking, so taps act as clicks. The text in the bubbles is small on a phone, and a laptop or desktop screen is the better choice.

When did it come out?

In November 2006. The version here is the author's remastered build, numbered v2.0 on the title screen.
